How did you discover ceramics? What is your first recollection?
My practice started with drawing and etching at the Academy. But after having seen an exhibition about Pre-Columbian ceramics, I felt compelled to discover clay. The more I learned about it, the more I was drawn into it. My first contact with clay was me kneading it.
What was the first thing you made with clay?
My first creation was a small pinch pot.
How would you describe your philosophical approach to making?
Simplicity, pay respects and do justice to the clay by reflecting its internal beauty to my works.
Are there any ceramicists that you follow and want to include in your collection?
Unfortunately, I don’t have a collection. Works from Pierre Bayle and Frère Daniel have been influential in guiding my practice.
Bio:
Dalya Anter Baruh is a ceramic artist based in Istanbul. She completed her education at Ecole National Supérieure des Arts Plastiques and Ecole National Superieur des Arts Applique Duppere in Paris.
Since 1990, she has been working in her own atelier creating unique vessel forms inspired by natural elements such as plants and landscapes, employing primitive methods such as using engobes, burnishing and terra sigillata.
