Tonight’s watch is a visual feast of maximalist

Tonight’s watch is a visual feast of maximalist decadence and surreal drama: Boom! (1968), directed by Joseph Losey and starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton — a cult classic of camp, couture, and crumbling grandeur.

Based on Tennessee Williams’ play The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore, the film unfolds on a remote Mediterranean island where a wealthy, dying woman (Taylor) receives a mysterious visitor (Burton). But plot takes a back seat to visual spectacle.

Designed by Renzo Mongiardino, the set is a fantasy of faded aristocracy—sun-bleached patios, Roman busts, Brutalist terraces, and sea-soaked cliffs. It’s both brutal and baroque, a dreamscape teetering between reality and theatre.

And then, the costumes. Taylor’s legendary looks were created by Karl Lagerfeld for Tiziani—caftans, turbans, beaded gowns, and statement jewels that drape and shimmer like armor for a woman on the edge. Each outfit is a scene-stealer, each gesture high drama.

Widely panned on release but now embraced as a cult masterpiece, Boom! is one of the boldest visual experiments of its time: absurd, hypnotic, and endlessly stylish.

Welcome to cinema as hallucination.
