Traveler: George Sotelo – Founder & Creative Director of Thorsun

Hello George, can you tell us about your most unforgettable escape? Bhutan ranks very high for me as far unforgettable trips go.

What was the purpose of your travel? Our friend who’s family started the Aman resorts insisted that we needed to see Bhutan and experience before it becomes too developed (which is far off). They helped organize the trip.

With how many people did you travel? The group was a total of 8 friends from across the globe.. American/Germans/French/Spanish and Chinese.

Where did you stay? The Aman resorts which in my opinion always get it RIGHT! have several lodges through out Bhutan called the Amankora. I stayed at three out of the five lodges.

What did you most like about the trip? Aisde from the stunning setting.. Bhutan is nestled in the middle of the Himalayas – the country is stuck in a beautiful time capsule… you could have easily told me it was the 40s and I would have believed you.. they take a lot of pride in holding onto local traditions.. there isnt a single stop light in the city.

Could you share an unforgettable memory about the trip? There were many experiences.. all for the most part beautiful .. everything from hiking to ancient temples to meeting the charming locals… but I would have to say my most “unforgettable” experience was when we decided to go white rafting and our raft almost capsized, everyone including the guide was thrown into the water.. VERY SCARY, but everyone was fine and we had a good laugh about it afterwards with lots of wine to calm our nerves.

Favorite restaurant or food you have tried during your trip? The Amankora does a really good job at mixing up the cuisine from lodge to lodge.. so I was very surprised that one of the lodges had a Mexican theme, which for me was great.. since i’m Mexican and wasn’t expecting tacos in the middle of the Himalayas.. The local meat is Yak.. which is worth a try, but im not in any rush to have another YakBurger.

Could you list a few of your favorite finds you came back with? Bhutan has amazing textiles.. very rich colors, interesting patterns.. great gifts.

Any tips that might be useful to know before going there? Bhutan doesn’t make it very easy for you to get enter.. You have to apply for a visa a months prior to your trip.. But its worth it!

Next stop you would like to visit? For my next trip I would like to visit Peru and take glass river boat cruise down the Amazon.
