A Mediterranean Escape: Crete

Traveler: Salvo Nicosia – Publicist

Where are you escaping? Crete, Greece, in the middle of the Mediterranean.

What was the purpose of your travel? Leisure, a well deserved summer break after long months of non-stop work and travels.

Where did you stay? I stayed mostly in the old town of CHANIA in a beautiful Venetian Mansion turned into a small boutique hotel family owned called Casa Leone with an amazing view of the old Venetian harbour.

What did you most like about the trip? I loved the fact that Crete is an ideal summer escape destination. I did enjoy the most beautiful sandy beaches and the crystal water. The island is large so most of the beaches are desert even in August.

At the same time you could do an immersion on the culture discovering the origins of the Minoan civilisation in the beautiful archaeological Museum of Heraklion and visiting the ruins of the Royal palace in Knossos. The Venetians who were in the island in 1600 have left also their ‘vestigia’ with beautiful ‘palazzo’ style buildings and mansions.

Favourite restaurant(s) or food you have tried during your trip? It is a Mediterranean ‘food porn heaven’ with dishes based on the ingredients of the island like fresh fish and seafood, lamb and veggies like aubergines. Love the grilled fish simply dressed with Virgin olive oil locally produced and a delicious sea urchins ragout risotto.

What are the must tries of the city? Sunrise and sunsets are not to be missed either from the harbour of CHANIA but also from a boat.

Would you go back? Definitely yes, need to visit the south of the island on my next trip.

Next stop you would like to visit? Mexico and Costa Rica.
