Recharging in Tulum

What is your most unforgettable escape? I recently returned from a 3 week North America trip during which I visited LA, Indio (Coachella), Palo Alto, San Francisco, Napa, Miami and Tulum, Mexico. Some places visiting for the first time and others for a return visit, however, if I had to pick a favorite it would have to be Tulum, for it’s pure beauty and sheer remoteness.

What was the purpose of your travel? Leisure, recharge.

With how many people did you travel? Myself and my boyfriend, it’s a very romantic place, ideal for a couples getaway.

Where did you stay? Azulik Hotel and Eco Resort, with minimal electricity everywhere was candle lit!

What did you most like about the trip? The food and the remoteness.

Could you share an unforgettable memory about the trip? It would have to be the Temazcal ritual, essentially a Maya cleansing ritual that takes place in a natural sweat cave; where one thanks the elements and cleanses of negative energy. (1.5-2 hours in a natural sauna!)

Your most surprising find during the trip? The beautiful ‘cenotes’ (natural caves) that house small bats, you can swim underneath their hanging heads.

Favorite restaurant(s) or food you have tried during your trip? Our best meal was at the new hotel Nomade, best guacamole and fresh crab.

What are the must tries of the city? For tacos I’d say Be Tulum, for delicious fresh pasta Posada Margharita and a great meal in general Nomade, we didn’t make it to Hartwood but also a must try.

Any hidden gems you could whisper to us? Nomade Hotel and Beach Restaurant, it’s new so still undiscovered, it was recommended by a local.

Would you go back? In a heart beat.

Could you list a few of your favorite finds you came back with? Being so mesmerized by the natural beauty I only found myself away from the beach to visit the Maya ruins and caves, however there are a number of bespoke boutiques along the beach road worth visiting.

Any tips that might be useful to know before going there? Always bargain. Do the touristy activities in the afternoon, it’s much too hot before 4pm, we learnt that the hard way. Also, avoid visiting in June-August, again, too hot.
