Scandinavian Island Living with Simone Faurschou

1. Could you tell us a little bit about yourself?

  • My name is Simone Faurschou and I’m a jeweler from Denmark. With a BA in jewelry design from Central Saint Martins, I now operate my own jewelry studio in Copenhagen. Here, I merge traditional craftsmanship with innovative technologies, focusing on the intersection where nature meets artifice. I’m deeply passionate about the storytelling potential of art and design, which is why I also enjoy lending my expertise to jewelry brands, assisting them with design, storytelling, and strategy. My collections often mirror the world around us, and lately, I’ve found myself drawn to nature more than ever. This immersion has sparked memories of my childhood experiences with silent retreats in nature, which have profoundly influenced me creatively. These retreats instilled in me a sense of duality—a blend of inner landscapes and external realities. Reconnecting with these experiences has provided me with a fresh perspective on the interconnectedness of everything, a recurring theme in all of my collections thus far.

2. What does ”escape” mean to you?

  • To me, “escape” is a whole vibe—the rush of stepping into the unknown, diving headfirst into those magical realms of mystery. It’s like breaking free from the ordinary, finding refuge in the endless possibilities of the unfamiliar. As a dreamer, I see “escape” as my ticket to wild adventures and endless discovery. It’s all about embracing the thrill of the journey, wherever it may lead.

3. Do you have a summer ritual?

  • Absolutely, I’m all about rituals, especially those summer ones—they’re like a breath of fresh air, with that sense of renewal and revival as nature bursts into life. It’s a season of growth and rejuvenation, both out in the world and deep within us. One of my favorite rituals is biking to the sea for a swim after a morning workout, followed by a coffee. And then there’s the simple joy of grounding myself in the earth, feeling the grass beneath my feet again after a long cold winter. These moments are pure magic to me.

4. Where is it you escape to habitually for true downtime?

  • The Island Møn in Denmark is like my second home and it’s where I go to unwind and find peace. It’s officially recognized as a “Dark Sky Park,” the only one in Scandinavia, which means the stargazing is out of this world. On lucky nights, you can catch a glimpse of the Milky Way stretching across the sky.

5. How long have you been visiting this place, and what draws you to it?

  • I’ve been going there since I was a little kid. Our family house is nestled in nature, and you’ll often see deer wandering around the house. Being near the sea is pure bliss. The place brings me a sense of peace, which is why I keep coming back. It connects me to my roots and parts of my family. It’s so quiet there—no people, cars, or streetlights. Just the sounds of nature.

6. Do you have an anecdote or unforgettable memory to share?

  • It was on the beach in Møn that I experienced my first walking meditation. I was an early teenager at the time, and my stepmom facilitated silent retreats there. We would walk in a large group along the beach, moving in what felt like absolute slow motion, with the mantra of each step being, “I’m arriving, I’m home.” I remember feeling a bit embarrassed back then when people would walk past us, but now I’m just grateful to have had those experiences at such a young age. They’ve become a significant part of my creative spirit today.

7. What about the best to: Do, see, stay, eat and drink at this particular escape?

  • Møn’s Klint is a must. It’s an incredibly scenic hike along stunning white chalk cliffs, with the turquoise Baltic Sea stretching out below. When the sunlight hits just right, it feels like you’ve been transported to Greece—another favorite escape destination of mine. Besides the breathtaking views, there are fantastic breweries and plenty of quirky independent spots to explore. I love cruising around, soaking up the vibes, and discovering new treasures every summer. It’s a hotspot for creativity.

8. Who are your favorite summer escape travel partners and why?

  • I love traveling with friends. It’s the best way to catch up properly without distractions. It allows for both deep conversations and fun, especially when there’s no set time limit. Being with friends in the warmth of the sun, losing sense of time and place, is my absolute idea of happiness.

9. What’s a new summer escape you embarked on this summer?

  • I’ve picked up horseback riding again at my dad’s farm. Escaping into the woods on a horse feels like pure energy, connecting with this majestic animal. My dad has built a conservatory where I sleep under the sky, and at 5 am, I wake up to the sounds of horses stirring next to me, accompanied by birds singing. The most magical part is the bright orange sun that takes over the whole place. Sunrises in Ibiza hold a special place in my heart too, but wow, this is something else.

10. What’s your ultimate escape soundtrack?

  • Calle Union / Maldito Aparato by Triana y Hermana Juana

11. What about this summer’s read?

  • I’m currently finishing off Herman Hesse’s Steppenwolf and my next read will be the Roots and Rhythm of the Heart by music therapist Krystal Demaine. It’s about how music and vibrational energy in the heart can influence our personal story, identity, health etc.

12. Which film do you revisit for the ultimate summer movie experience?

  • Fantasia. I used to watch it every summer with my siblings when we went up north to spend the summer with family. We were all mesmerized by the music and animations. It was mysterious, terrifying, and beautiful all at once

13. Where do you hope to head next?

  • I’d love to return to Tuscany this summer. It’s been years and I can imagine biking around in the beautiful landscape, eating great food and reading under the warm sun, followed by dinners with loved ones that stretch long into the night.
