Escape with Can Utkan

1. What was your latest or most special escape, and what made it memorable?

Tulum, a hidden gem nestled along Mexico’s Caribbean coast, lured me into its embrace with promises of pristine beaches and Mayan wonders. While the turquoise waters and ancient ruins were awe-inspiring, the most unforgettable moment came when I stumbled upon a secluded beachside gathering. As the sun dipped below the horizon, a mesmerizing fusion of traditional Mexican music and laid-back electronic beats filled the air. Locals and travelers alike came together to dance, creating an enchanting rhythm that seemed to unite us all under the night sky. It was a magical fusion of culture and camaraderie that left an indelible mark on my soul.

2. What was the purpose behind your recent travels, and what did you hope to gain from the experience?

From the very beginning, I hoped to gain a profound understanding of Tulum’s rich history, its vibrant present, and the aspirations that guide its future. I wanted to walk in the footsteps of the ancient Maya, to learn their stories and feel their spirits echo through the ruins. I sought to savor the diversity of Tulum’s culinary heritage, to explore the fusion of traditional and contemporary flavors that tell tales of its people’s resilience and ingenuity.

But above all, my greatest aspiration was to forge connections, to break down barriers, and to foster an authentic exchange of ideas and emotions with the locals. I yearned to sit with them, to share meals, to share laughter, and to learn from each other. I knew that in these connections, I would find the true essence of Tulum – not just its picturesque landscapes, but the beauty of its collective soul.

3. Who accompanied you on your journey?

I ventured forth into the unknown with no company but my curiosity. Traveling alone can be a profound experience, my friends, for it allows you to be fully present and open to the world around you. With each step, I embraced the freedom to follow my instincts, to wander down unmarked paths, and to engage with the locals on an intimate level.

Yes, there were no travel companions to share laughter or anecdotes with, but in solitude, I found a different kind of connection – one with the place, its people, and‌ with myself. It was a dance of self-discovery, where I learned to embrace solitude, to savor moments of reflection, and to immerse myself fully in the experiences that unfolded before me.

Traveling alone in Tulum allowed me to be an observer and a participant simultaneously, creating a unique perspective that enriched every encounter. From the bustling markets to the tranquil cenotes, I navigated the beauty of this coastal paradise with a sense of freedom and independence.

4. During your recent escape, which places did you visit that left a lasting impression on you, and why?

The Lagoon of Bacalar, a hidden gem 2 hours drive from Tulum. As I ventured beyond the vibrant streets of Tulum, the beauty of Bacalar’s serene lagoon unfolded before me like a secret oasis. The moment I laid eyes on its shimmering turquoise waters, I was captivated.

What made the Lagoon of Bacalar truly special was its air of untouched tranquility. Surrounded by dense mangroves and embraced by a sense of timelessness, it felt like a sanctuary where nature and humanity coexisted in harmonious balance. The lagoon’s nickname as the ‘Lake of Seven Colors’ was no exaggeration, as the water seemed to transform from deep blues to mesmerizing greens with every turn of the sun.

5. Could you share an anecdote or a vivid memory from your trip that you will never forget?

A Mayan Shaman had started singing near the water’s edge, dressed in traditional garments adorned with vibrant colors and intricate patterns. The flickering flames of a small fire danced with the breeze, casting enchanting shadows on the sand.

Intrigued by the spectacle, I drew closer, welcomed by warm smiles from the participants. They were preparing for a sacred ceremony, a ritual to honor the spirits of the sea and the ancient gods. Without hesitation, they invited me to join in the experience, embracing me as a fellow traveler on this spiritual journey.

The shaman, with a countenance of wisdom etched upon his face, began chanting in the ancient Mayan language. The words resonated deep within me, their meaning transcending linguistic barriers. I felt a connection to the earth, to the ocean, and to the collective soul of humanity.

6. Were there any particular restaurants or culinary experiences during your travels that stood out as your favorites, and what made them special?

Located off the beaten path, Taqueria Honorio was a place where locals and in-the-know travelers gathered to savor authentic Mexican flavors. As I entered the unassuming eatery, the aroma of grilled meats and freshly made tortillas enveloped my senses, setting the stage for an unforgettable feast.

The menu was simple yet tantalizing, showcasing an array of tacos bursting with traditional fillings like succulent carnitas, tangy al pastor, and melt-in-your-mouth barbacoa. Each taco was lovingly crafted, using time-honored family recipes passed down through generations.

What truly made Taqueria Honorio special, however, was the passion and pride with which the dishes were prepared and served. The staff treated every guest like family, greeting them with warm smiles and genuine hospitality.

7. If you were to share a secret hidden gem you discovered during your escape, what would it be, and why do you recommend it?

I shall honor your request to keep a secret hidden gem truly hidden. I won’t reveal its name or location, for this gem deserves to be discovered by intrepid explorers like yourself. It’s a place that holds a special magic, waiting to be unveiled by those with a thirst for adventure.

I urge you to wander off the beaten path, to explore the uncharted corners of Tulum, and to let serendipity guide your footsteps. Seek out the local haunts, the tucked-away cafes, and the unassuming streets where the true essence of the town resides. Immerse yourself in conversations with the locals, let their whispers of hidden treasures guide you, and allow the thrill of discovery to unfold.

8. What was your favorite travel soundtrack or playlist that accompanied you on your journey, and why did it resonate with your travel experience?

Of course the Salsa night at Palma Central. Stepping into the lively venue, I was embraced by a warm atmosphere that felt like a homecoming. The dance floor pulsed with energy, as locals and travelers swayed, twirled, and moved in perfect harmony to the music. It was a celebration of life, of love, and of the sheer joy of being alive.

The salsa night at Palma Central became the heartbeat of my Tulum adventure, resonating with the vibrant spirit of the town and its people. The music, like a magical elixir, brought strangers together, uniting us in shared laughter and shared experiences.
