St Barths with the Crew

Traveler: Juliette Charvet – Fine Art & Travel Photographer

What is your most unforgettable escape? I travel a lot both for work and pleasure so there is not “one” unforgettable escape but many! I had already been to St Barth but this trip was actually my first one with my entire “crew”, i.e. my two baby girls, my husband, my sister and my parents. So in that sense it was very unique…

What was the purpose of your travel? To recover from NYC’s polar winter, to celebrate my parents 40th anniversary, to spend some quality time with my family, and of course, to take photos…

Where did you stay? We stayed at a villa close to Flamands, one of St Barths beautiful beaches. It was a hidden house on a hill, surrounded by lots of trees and lots of birds… A jungle paradise, a full immersion into nature.

What did you most like about the trip? We had a ritual every day, to go watch the sunset at the beach. The light was so peaceful and inspiring.

Could you share an unforgettable memory about the trip? My little girl first encounter with a wild turtle. They were both petrified!

Your most surprising find during the trip? The salt marsh on the road to Petit Cul de Sac. So unexpected.

Favorite restaurant(s) or food you have tried during your trip? The food in St Barths is exceptional… Eddy’s restaurant in Gustavia is definitely a must go, with a great atmosphere and local recipes (fresh catch of the day, “christophines gratin”, etc) it’s just delicious!

What are the must tries of the city?

Drive to Toiny on the Cote Sauvage on the other side of the island…it is very wild and the landscape is so different from the rest of St Barths.

Visit the Noureev house.

Walk on Gouverneur beach early in the morning.

For a bit a culture and great finds, go check Clic gallery in Gustavia, which features beautiful photos, photography books and lots of great clothes/jewelery/bags etc.

At Flamands, drink a fresh cocktail juice at the beach bar of Hotel Isle de France.

Any hidden gems you could whisper to us?

The “Anse Marechal” beach next to Guanahani hotel.

The beautiful Colombier trail from Flamands beach. You have to walk for 20′ before arriving to Colombier, a very secluded beach. It feels like arriving on a deserted island.

Would you go back? Yes yes yes!!! It was my 4th time in St Barths and I definitely want to go back as soon as I can!

Could you list a few of your favorite finds you came back with?

A great “Apolis” bag for Clic Gallery St Barth, recycled in hemp

Some Ligne St Barth body oil,

and just everything from the supermarket, the drugstore and the newsstand…as a French girl living in NY, I miss everything I can find in France and not in New York, from shower gel to coffee to sunscreen to magazines and the latest books. So getting to St Barth was like getting into ali baba cave, I arrived with one carry-on and left with two luggages.

Any tips that might be useful to know before going there? Take a night flight from NYC to Puerto Rico and fly early in the morning to St Barth. This way you arrive at 9 am and don’t lose a day travelling.

Next stop you would like to visit? The Andes. Machu-Pichu and lake Titicaca…
